review 1: This is an inspiring book; the story of how a sports 'hero' can go beyond himself and make a difference in the lives of others that he doesn't even know. As someone who likes to cycle, this story had appeal to me from that aspect, but it quickly takes on a deeper meaning and reality. Not being aware of the history of Fascist Italy of the '30s and the oppression and treatment of the Jews in WWII Italy, it was an eye-opener for me. The Epilogue has two quotes that summarize the "meaning" of Bartali's life 'on the bike' ('in the public eye'):“If you’re good at a sport, they attach the medals to your shirts and then they shine in some museum. That which is earned by doing good deeds is attached to the soul and shines elsewhere.”and this one that is less quoted, whic... moreh speaks to the humility of Bartali:"I don't know if I saved the country, but I gave it back its smile."
review 2: This book was perfect because the 2013 Tour was going on as I was reading it and I was currently traveling and participating in my own bike racing series in Wisconsin. Plus, I got to see and touch one of Gino's team bikes in an art display at one of my races! It was amazing and I was so excited! I wish I could use my bicycle for good and help the world in a positive way the way Gino Bartali did. Inspirational!! less

An inspiration - a book about a man whom I think many of us can identify with.
