review 1: A book of nonfiction about an Italian cyclist from very very humble roots who lived out World War II in Italy. What struck me about this book is that it read like a novel; it was so well researched that the author was able to reproduce actual conversations, and puts the reader inside the heart and soul of the main character. In addition, I found it illuminating to discover so much more about what it was like in Italy during the war; what it was like to live under Mussolini and later the Germans. I did not realize that Italy also had "relocation" camps within its borders and I did not know the strength of the Italian resistance to these totalitarian forces. This is an inspiring and informative story and a good read.
review 2: The story of Gino Bartali, an Italia
... moren cyclist who holds the record for longest time span between Tour de France victories. When his career was disrupted by WWII, Bartali worked to protect persecuted Italian Jews and Jewish refugees by delivering falsified identity documents during his "training rides." The book is thoroughly researched and attributed but still an easy read. Definitely an inspiring story. less

Great story of the Tour de France and the history of Italy through WW2. I really enjoyed it.

This book should have been better. It's a great true story, but this book doesn't deliver.
