review 1: The 6 key drivers of global change that Al Gore identifies and explores are important for leaders and thinkers and citizens of the world to know, appreciate, and work with. Gore makes a good job of identifying those drivers and some of the issues arising from them. Yet more will be required to relate those ideas and issues in ways that we can actually constructively talk about them and debate them publicly and fruitfully. Perhaps one of the most important repeated themes in the book is the importance of democratic engagement in our diversity, and the need in the United States to revitalize and reclaim democratic practices that allow for creating and sustaining public goods that are defined by the public, not by big monied interests.
review 2: This book really s
... morehows the geeky side of Al Gore. Having said that, however, I wonder if it shows more the cynical side of me; I have grown over the years not to expect my politicians to sound so fact-filled and pessimistic, which is the overall tone of this book. As I read through it I kept telling myself, "Al must have hired a sh*tload of ghost writers -- surely he cannot be this erudite." If he truly is the writer of this book, he deserves honor not normally bestowed on American politicians. The scary thing is he was starting to sound like Lyndon LaRouche.... The shortcomings I see in this book are 1) the absence of visual aids that would have helped to show some of the trends he is talking about, and 2) the strange mind mapping he did for each chapter. First, the branches were not in color, so it was hard to distinguish them. Second, I failed to see how they helped anyone but maybe Mr. Gore organize his writing. If the diagrams truly show the mapping of Mr. Gore's mind, hmmm...(see previous reference to Lyndon). But, once I learned to ignore them, the reading went better. less

Well researched - lots of interesting ideas here, with a great bibliography for follow-up research.

A truly excellent read, and an interesting "big picture" analysis of the drivers of global change.
