review 1: This was a really pretty book, the photos and the layout and the size. (This is how you can tell I'm a bibliophile, I am giddy to find "pretty"books.)Of course it goes without saying that Al Gore gives accurate scientific information about climate change and all of the effects we are bound to feel (and most certainly will, as today we learned that we passed 440 ppm of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere; the tipping point was 370-390). If you want to read about climate change in simple and startling prose, I recommend this book. The explanations are simple and accurate. Put aside how you feel about Gore's politics--this isn't about party affiliation or who you voted for. It's about what the science is telling us and the warning we have failed the ... moreheed.
review 2: Informative, clear, well written and effective at passing a message. That message is that human society will gain a lot from facing now its current environmental challenges, instead of delaying action. The first step is to admit there is a challenge to face, but by now that should be already clear to anyone interested in basing their opinions on facts, so Al Gore prefers to focus instead on the many different options available to overcome it. The overall tone of the book is optimistic, but it recognises that our brains are not very well prepared to deal with the climate crisis, since we have difficulty thinking on the long term. So making the right choice would require something new, which would be a hallmark of our progress as a species, the ultimate proof of our modernity. However, emissions continue to rise and we don't seem able to take off from the status quo. Things are changing but slowly. How different will the Earth be when we finally are able to implement the tools and solutions that will halt its degradation? That's our choice to make. less
