review 1: This is definitely a book for kids, with a 'My Monster Totoro' feel to it, and a tendency to hammer you over the head with its message of acceptance. When Olivia and her writer father move into a new house, Olivia discovers Burrufu, a monster that likes cookies and writes books in a secret room. She befriends him in spite of his dislike of people, and they have some adventures. A lot of it feels very cliched, but the art is cute and the message is good for the most part (although painting the military as the villains in stories at this age may be a bit much). It's not going to go down as a masterpiece of children's literature, but it's nice enough.

... more This book is absolutely wonderful! Alberto Corral has found the perfect way to teach young children about the horrors of prejudice in a way that is sensitive to the very young while using wonder and clarity of youthful imagination. "My Monster Burrufu" is the perfect book for ages 6 and up, as it melds a wonderful story with a lesson that will stay with them forever. I highly recommend this book to every one not just children alone. less
