I normally write my own overview but I didn’t think I could do the synopsis justice, so, this is the direct synopsis from the book.
“A beautiful and distinguished family. A private island. A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy. A group of four friends – the Liars – whose friendship turns destructive. A revolution. An accident. A secret. Lies upon lies. True love. The truth.”
Well this was a pleasant surprise! I must admit that despite the synopsis I was expecting this to turn out to be a typical coming of age tale, like so many other contemporary books in this genre are. This certainly can not be described as that. It is suspenseful, intriguing and beautifully worked by the author.
The book is written in Cadences POV as she details the summers that her and her cousins/friends (they call themselves the “Liars”) spend on the family island. Then in summer 15 something happens on the island and Cadence struggles to discover what really happened.
The writing style is completely vivid and unique. This may polarise some readers but after my initial double-take with some of the more shocking metaphors I eased into it and started to enjoy the uniqueness of it.
“…My father put the last suitcase into the backseat of the Mercedes (he was leaving Mummy with only the Saab), and started the engine.
Then he pulled out a handgun and shot me in the chest…”
It is hard to review this book without giving too much of the plot away but I will say it is a beautifully sad tale. If you are after a good, quick and interesting read then this is the book for you.
