review 1: Secrets run deep in Blackhampton, a town which is slowly sinking into the mud. Its people are superstitious, the tunnels hold more than ore, and three people are missing. Inspector Day, and Sergeant Hammersmith come to their aid, but they couldn't have foreseen how uncooperative the townsfolk would be. Three separate cases are revealed as one in this exciting sequel to the Yard. Unlike the first, things aren't immediately clear. There is a mystery here! The culprits are fairly obvious, but seeing how everything is connected keeps it interesting. Once again, it is the characters that really shine though. The dedicated Hammersmith works himself to the bone, while Day remains open-minded even with so many suspicious people around. London may be full of crime, but the Black Co... moreuntry's darkness courses through many in this town, and it will not leave these outsiders unharmed.
review 2: Much like his first book, there are weaknesses in this one. I still take some issue with the dialog, it simply isn't consistent with the period. And there was a lot of plot to track. But it was very readable. As in, just sit down and read til the book ends, readable. And, again, as my guess is he's hoping, if Grecian is writing with an eye to realizing a televised series, he's on the right track. The visuals of the village and its setting would be great. less
