review 1: The first book in this series was phenomenal. The second was very good though not quite as good as the first. This one was a total disappointment. Unlike the previous two this was a gore-fest. Completely unnecessary. Everything that could possible go wrong does, making it an extremely frustrating read. Don't we have enough of that in reality? The police force have suddenly become completely incompetent. Inspector Day's wife is extremely annoying. Even Day himself is not what he used to be. As I write this I have about 50 pages left and am struggling to finish. Not sure whether I will attempt any of the author's future books.
review 2: And Grecian and his Murder Squad series rebounds! I loved Book 1, The Yard and was extremely disappointed in Book 2,
... moreThe Black Country. But Book 3 returned to London and the wonderful cast of characters I fell in love with from The Yard. And the tension and gruesomeness (often extreme, ICK! Yet I was completely enraptured.) were all there too. In The Devil's Workshop a prison break is arranged by a group of vigilantes determined to mete out their own brand of justice. To this end they make sure four specific prisoners escape with the intent to immediately capture them themselves and put them through brutal torture to teach them a lesson. They've already started this practice on none other than the infamous Jack the Ripper. Unfortunately, their plans go awry, Jack the Ripper joins a familiar escapee, Cinderhouse from The Yard, and begins to wreak havoc again on London. And, as they say, "this time it's personal". All my favorite characters were plunged into mortal danger time and again so that I could see no way out for them. In particular, as with poor little Fenn in Book 1, I was pretty sure I was going to throw the book across the room when Hammersmith ended up with a pair of scissors in his chest. Luckily for him, Alex Grecian was spared a scathing email from me. :) The Epilogue set up Book 4 nicely, and I hope will also address numerous questions I have about Hammersmith and Fiona's relationship, Hammersmith's career, whether the Days will move out of their "spoiled" house, if we'll ever see the grim Jack the Ripper again, and hey, whatever happened to Kingsley's assistant Henry? A definite recommendation, but only if you have the stomach for it. less
