review 1: This book was extremely appealing-from not just the encounters that Felix Sparks went through, but the book also merged in some point of views from the Germans and the other men serving under Sparks command, or just other men in the US army. I enjoyed this book very much and it will be one of my favorite WWII books. I recommend this book for those who want to settle down with an astonishing yet heartbreaking adventure of a US soldier during WWII, those who take an interest in WWII, or those who take interest in WWII battles, such as Sicily and Anzio. Also, this book can be recommended for those who want to discover how the soldiers felt when they discovered the horrendous Dachau concentration camp. This book is five-star.
review 2: I was very disappointed with
... more this book. The premise seemed interesting but the execution failed on the promise of an interesting tale. To my reading, it appeared the author started with only enough bits and pieces of information to cobble together half a complete story. His challenge was to gather enough more from additional sources to make the story whole. In the end, I think he got to around three quarters complete but the final product is really short of being a full story. Some incidents are related in great detail, not necessarily because of significance but perhaps only when such detail was available to him. Other moments are glossed over or treated only superficially, suggesting a lack of information on which to base a more expanded storyline. That resulted in an uneven flow. At times I was left scratching my head wondering why so much ink was wasted on what might have been a minor part of an incident while other parts of that same experience seemed to have been skipped over quickly. Great authors of this genre, David McCullough comes to mind as one example, seem to require 4-5 years or more to produce one book. Mr. Kershaw might be well served to slow down his production from every year or so to a longer interval, to allow himself enough time for adequate research. less
