review 1: There are people who fought for their country with courage and bravery, paid a high price of suffering and or death for our freedom. Honour them by reading this book. On the flipside, the inhuman cruelty of the Japanese captors is shocking. Read this book to understand how cruel people can be. Don't expect happy endings for the survivors, though. Besides PTSD, they even suffered from survivor's guilt. It's a little hard to take, but still. Read it.
review 2: War related non-fiction often comes across as bullet-statement staccato and fact-pounding dry. However, that isn't the case with "Escape from the Deep: A Legendary Submarine and her Courageous Crew." Kershaw masterfully blends together meticulously researched data, technical jargon, and chronological facts,
... more with that of heartfelt human elements, trials, and tragedies - so compassionately and seamlessly, I felt as if I'd traveled back in time and was experiencing the harrowing events and struggles firsthand. It touched me deeply. Freedom isn't free. May we never forget the sacrifices of our service members, past and present, lest the price they pay be in vain. less
