review 1: This story set in the American Revolutionary War illustrates some of the unfair binds affecting women of that era as well as the physical stress and uncertainty affecting the daily lives of men who fought in the war. The main character, a female, witnesses and participates in combat, grappling privately with her own gender identity as she tries to maintain a consistently male presentation to other soldiers. History seems a bit different when told from the point of view of a person with this experience.
review 2: A powerful, well-written story with the backdrop of the Revolutionary War, this book reflects on the nature of gender and what it means to find real love as well as to be "faithful." I would have given it five stars if not for a slightly abrupt, unconv... moreincing ending and a subplot about a traitor that somewhat stalls. Still a highly recommended read, especially for those who enjoy historical fiction. less
