review 2: I thought the book had a lot of promise, but I felt somewhat let down by it. First of all the latter half of the book isn't as exciting as the first half. Probably it's because it's the first book in a trilogy, so the end of the book isn't anywhere near the end of the actual story. Still it was a disappointment, because the plot felt really dull towards the end. I really liked the first half of the book, but I can't help but feel that it was more despite the writing than because of it. It is an intriguing setting, with intriguing twists on the more typical fantasy species, but I kept getting distracted by the constant tense shifts. Thankfully it's mostly towards the beginning. I really liked the main character, though. Not that he's perfect, far from it - he's rather a shady character and not afraid to brag to the reader about it, but I like that.My main problem with the book, however, is the marketing of it. It is marketed as being rather dark, but frankly, it's not really any darker than the typical epic fantasy. Sure, there's demons and apparitions and dark magic and dark creatures, but they're never really scary. Perhaps I simply had too much faith that it was going to end well, which might be a result of the MC's faith in himself. But frankly, if you want dark and scary demons you are better off reading Peter V. Brett's books. It might feel darker in its native Russian, who knows. It's also marketed as highly original fantasy, which is odd since it follows pretty much the oldest formula in the history of fantasy. (The first half of the book, where the setting itself is more prominent, is rather more original than the latter half) The world is threatened, so various characters of various races are gathered and persuaded to join a group of people setting out on a quest to set things right. It's the stereotypical LotR-feel, really. The setting might be different and the twists regarding the setting and the characters might be different, but I just had the feeling (particularly through the latter half) that I had read it all before, somehow. Most of the originality of the book is in the first half, when Harold prepares for the quest, not without problems. Those parts were quite enjoyable.Despite its problems I would recommend giving this book a try. Not only because it's a Russian author, but because it actually was an enjoyable read. I really liked the characters, particularly in the part of the plot that happened in Avendoom, and the history and culture was intriguing. less
