review 1: Book #2 reviewed during my "Romancing the Tome" book project, data for the entire project to be released when I have enough (minimum 100 books).I will however state that this is the first romance novel I have ever read in which the heroine flat out punches the other main character, whether or not he deserves it (he does, by the way, and he also does a few other creepy things in this novel that would have me running for my life if it weren't in the context of a romance novel). She actually gut-punches him. That's a romance made in heaven all right.
review 2: Eh. I got this book because I was in the mood for a western historical romance. I'm STILL devastated that LaVyrle Spencer retired, and have never found a romance author that has the same magic as she had.
... moreThis one looked ok, and I was able to download a sample before buying the entire book. Obviously, the sample was good enough that I bought the rest to finish it, but by the end, I wasn't all that impressed. It was readable, but by the end, I felt like it incorporated all the typical romance tropes and cliches - almost like she was forcing them in at the end to fulfill the formula. The cranky hero that warms up after that heroine breaks down his walls, the town prostitute our hero has been frequenting, who of course is secretly in love with him, the (very minor) villain who throws enough of a wrench into things that the hero is able to overcome his past hurts and issues by dealing with said villian, etc. the list goes on. Also, I didn't love the characters. I didn't hate them by any means, I just really didn't feel for them, either. Yay, they got together in the end (of course) but I didn't really care. They did not compel me at all. I really WISH had enjoyed this book more so I could go back to this author when I am in the mood for a romance, but as it was, I think I will continue my search for a good western historical romance author. Sigh. less

The end was a bit abrupt.
