review 1: There But for the is a typical Ali Smith book - clever, funny (if you're a fan of jokes and puns) and an educational experience as well. I can guarantee that you'll learn and be entertained in the process. The plot is typical Ali Smith as well. A man locks himself up in a room for a couple of weeks. This leads to digressions on the state of language, art, film. Not to mention other little jabs at using the past in order to make a profit and philosophy of language. The reason why this one received four stars is that the digressions did go on a bit too long, in Smith's previous books (and her most recent one - How to be Both) extra dialogue is kept to a minimum but here she goes full out. Saying that structure-wise this is definitely her strongest one and it's definitely wo... morerth reading.
review 2: Strange concept - a man shuts himself into a room at a dinner party and doesn't leave - but wonderfully executed. What a brilliant writer Smith is - faultless, fearless and surprising. I loved the word play and word musing in the novel (the many implications of 'there'), the chapter divisions thereby, the multiple narrators and voices and how everything connected. Clever, intriguing, original and hard-hitting. Finally, an exciting new writer to read! less

Lots of nice bits. Dawdles a bit, but a good read nonetheless
