review 1: This book was an absolute hoot - and a good antidote to the baby books I've been trawling through.Obviously, this book is satire. At least, I thought this was obvious - but reading some reviews, people are annoyed that there isn't any actual useful or accurate "advice" (I even read one review that took the authors to task for ascribing the wrong disease to cats.)Which makes me laugh even more.Think of this book like a long-form article on "The Onion". It's hilarious, and well-directed - by the time you're in the mood to actually find some of this baby-baking malarkey funny, you've already ingested a lot of the right advice and you're just ready for a laugh.I did read this in one go, which is probably not the best way to go, because after a while the humour wore off a littl... moree (and I nodded off. Hey, I'm in the third trimester. That sh*t happens.)But the nodding/humour wearing off wasn't the content - because I've since read bits out loud to friends and family and realised it's best in small and frequent doses.Like most humour, there's obviously some people who won't get it - so if you're looking to give this as a gift, make sure the person you give it to would appreciate the fun and hilarity - and wouldn't be the type to post a bitchy review complaining about the fat jokes.
review 2: This book, for me, was the perfect antidote to all the other books and websites I read while pregnant. Ironically, every time a Serious Baby Book sent me into panic about what was about to happen to me (particularly since I had a scheduled c-section and several of said Serious Books were rather intentionally frightening on the topic) I would pick up Let's Panic and feel much better. It has also provided hours of entertainment for both my mother and mother-in-law when they come over to help with the twins. Then again, I share a fairly whacked sense of humor with both these wonderful ladies.Certainly not for everyone (particularly if you don't like cursing or discussions of babies that involve things other than "oh they're so wonderful"), but this book really was a great fit for me. A welcome addition to my parenting library! less
