review 1: I almost want to say 3.5 stars. It took me a lot longer to finish this book than expected. I grew bored with the book and had to do other things. But for the most part this book was a breath of fresh air.But I will give it four simply because it was nothing like those with live triangles and unreal romances that most of us are still waiting for. This book shows us a strong girl who struggled and never gave up no matter the costs or how hope seemed to dissipate. It takes me through a journey of hiding and eventually accepting who you are and all the flaws and quirks that you possess. I truly admire what Goodman did with this character. As well as how well she developed the world, the dragons, and the politics of this novel. I think it was well written although slow paced. B... moreut it gave a lot of detail and background information. Unfortunately, I can not say I will read the next book. I just didn't love it enough to read the sequel.
review 2: "I believe that to the only way to describe this book and writing is that it was beautiful, powerful, and captivating. I couldn't put it down unless I made myself put the space marker in and even that wasn't enough. The part I liked the most was the fact that when she found the journal from the past dragon spirit holders. What I've taken from this book is that you should be true to yourself and let nothing stand in your way. I think the stronger part of the book was the setting and time period, because it takes place in Japan in a time where women were thought of as a weaker species and where not allowed to fight like men. For those who like adventure and secrets this is a series you will like, I know I'll be reading the sequel." ~ Aluren Zolman less
