review 1: Funny! My daughter and I both were laughing about this book! The story itself is about a pig farmer who finds a gold nugget and buys a great hog to take to the fair in Laredo but she is having all kinds of issues trying to get there and it all starts with a river that she can't get across. Its kind of like There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly...in that something happens and it gets repeated with the next item on the next page and so on. The language is pretty funny and we read it outloud with as much Texas twang as we could come up with and both ended up laughing!! Loved the illustrations, to cute!
review 2: Finally a Show-Me Readers Award Nominee that I liked!!The text in Desert Rose is very cute and it feels as though it should be read with a big Sout
... morehern accent and yee-haw. Poor Rose is only trying to use a shortcut to get her hog to the state fair, but the hog won't take a drink, the coyote won't bite the hog, the snake won't scare the coyote, and so on. This is a circular story and Rose keeps trying to find someone or something to help get her hog to the fair. Readers will enjoy seeing how Rose gets everything to work and the funny "moral" at the end is too cute. The artwork is bright and engaging. It might be a bit long for storytime, but if you have older readers who can sit through longer books, this is worth giving a try. less

Illustrations were beautiful and such a fun story to read with a southern twang.

A fun book for storytime. Lots of "western" words that will make kids giggle.
