It Only Happens In The Movies by Holly Bourne Review!

Audrey is over romance. Since her parents’ relationship imploded her mother’s been catatonic, so she takes a cinema job to get out of the house. But there she meets wannabe film-maker Harry. Nobody expects Audrey and Harry to fall in love as hard and fast as they do. But that doesn’t mean things are easy. Because real love isn’t like the movies…

The greatest love story ever told doesn’t feature kissing in the snow or racing to airports. It features pain and confusion and hope and wonder and a ban on cheesy clichés. Oh, and zombies… YA star Holly Bourne tackles real love in this hugely funny and poignant novel.

This book is probably the most honest book I’ve ever read. Audrey’s life isn’t perfect, its probably close to most peoples normal just with a bit more drama. Audrey’s life has stuff going on, stuff thats not her fault and out of her control but still affects her. This book really talks about the cliche of romantic comedies/films. Cliche and what is expected always seems to pay a big role in Holly Bourne’s books. This book talks a lot about Cliche and thats whats going to happen because its happened before, e.g.: the guy always gets the girl.

Holly Bourne also shows a great representation of friendships, real friendships that suffer ups and downs, fall outs and make ups. Family relationships in this book are probably over dramatic, but I get why. To make a point. To emphasise the effect of her families drama on her.

Harry is the stories love interest and he’s a very stereotypical ‘bad boy’, and that does play into the theme of cliches as Audrey does the whole ‘he will be different with me’ and   ‘I shouldn’t fall for him but I am’ thing. I felt this made the story more real as the reader believe the same as Audrey.

Holly Bourne is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors, and her books always have an empowering message and important meaning, which is what makes them so good!

Ultimately this book is a fun, funny, very enjoyable read and I think its a must read
