review 1: This is a brilliant old school literary novel focused on character and the way this character views the world. In present tense, Futh is on a modern day walking tour of Germany and in past tense on a sensory tour of his past, much of it unpleasant but also beautifully rendered through olfactory sensory perception. It is a tour of a man no one appears to appreciate, a tour of a man who is unable to piece together the ugly vagaries of life. Moore's skillful writing produces a novel that illuminates like a lighthouse, but showers the protagonist in fog. Quietly, persistently, the novelist provides Futh with bursts of warning light, but the reader and Futh continue toward what can only be a dashing upon the shore.
review 2: At first, I found this book rather odd an
... mored I found that getting into it was quite difficult because it didn't seem like much was happening, or that much was going to happen. However, as the book progressed, I became more engrossed in how these characters were going to share their stories, and what would happen if they did. The ending of The Lighthouse struck me by complete suprise. Looking back, it makes sense now, but at the time it really struck me. less

Epic for a first novel. A definite page turner, with a really intense focus on human flaws.
