review 1: Excellent book I highly recommend it.It tells the story of the MacDonald family, who leave Scotland in the late 18th Century to journey to Canada and it follows the lives of their descendants in the Cape Breton area of Nova Scotia. Told thought the eyes of Alexander MacDonald orphaned as a child by a terrible tragedy he and his twin sister are raised by their grandparents. A good story about family history, loyalty and tradition.Recommended by Mary, Pugwash Library
review 2: While this is beautifully written in places it suffers from a distinct lack of story. A series of vaguely connected anecdotes does not a novel make. The sense of history and place is strong and for that I gave it an extra star. But really, this is a one star book with a bonus star for quali
... morety in places. Perhaps there's a good novella in here somewhere? But then, my wife absolutely loved it, so clearly it's just not the right book for me. less
