review 1: My review of this book is that it was just okay. I really liked The Art Forger and enjoyed The Goldfinch, so thought this book about the art world would be similarly satisfying. A Nearly Perfect Copy had a similar plot line to The Art Forger, but was not as exciting of a read. Though there was the added element of Elm's tragic loss and the book was written from two perspectives, I felt disjointed while reading and finished the book just so that I could finish it, not because I wanted to know what happened.
review 2: Hard to rate for me. It did keep my attention. The story of the art world taking place in New York and in Paris. Struggling artist in Paris, descendant of a famous painter gets involved in a forgery scheme. Art expert in a New York auction house, wh
... moreose job it is to acquire and verify 18th and 19 century pieces gets involved in a "forgery" of her own which involves both the art world and her own world. Interesting concepts both in the professional and personal aspects of this story. Don't want to give any spoilers but it demostrates that fooling an expert is not uncommon. It can and is done probably more than anyone realises. Trying to fill a desperate personal void drives people to desperate measures; this also happens more than people realize. In both events it's a forgery of sorts. The story kept my attention. It's told from the New York POV and the Paris POV in alternating chapters. The concepts of the main protagonists were interesting - especially the female storyline. I thought the ending was very abrupt; it just left you hanging(no pun intended). I even thought I missed something and turned the page expecting more, very disconcerting. less

Loved the art references, but the cloning was bizarre.
