review 1: Eh. This was okay, but I wasn't impressed. All the characters felt flat. I didn't really like any of them. I had pegged this more a cozy mystery, but it didn't feel that way at all. The extreme jealousy of the police officer was out of place and, truthfully, offensive. There wasn't a lot of action happening in this book either. In fact, 95% of the book took place in the bar. And even that was mostly the characters talking to each other or getting information via phone from the police. So, meh.
review 2: For me, this book was a bit difficult to rate. I really enjoyed Mack. She's funny, smart, and sassy - everything I like in a protagonist. Throw in her unique condition, and she becomes someone I wish were real. I'd hang out with her! The use of her... more condition in the book is really good. It's a really interesting and good addition to a cozy mystery. I also enjoyed Duncan. He's smart, charming, and very likeable. The plot line is very interesting, using some local legends to create a mystery. However, it's not all good for me. There were too many supporting characters. After reading a name, many times I had to stop and really think about who s/he was. There were at least 7 supporting characters - too many!!! Another thing that I didn't really like about this book was that the entire thing (minus one scene) takes place inside the bar. I would have loved to have gotten outside and around Milwaukee. These are minor things and not enough to keep me from giving this series another try. less
