review 1: This is for those who like a sprawling story. I think of writers like Richard Russo. In this case the protagonist is history professor Harry, who is obsessed with Richard Nixon. His marriage is thin as a cat's whisker. He has a very successful younger brother, head of a TV network. He despises all his greedy and dishonest brother represents. The story begins on Thanksgiving, and follows the man's life in great detail to the next holiday dinner. To say much more would introduce many spoilers. The unimaginable, yet realistic, happens repeatedly, and Harry finds almost every aspect of his life overturned while he must manage each disaster. It is a coming-of-age story and also a critique of certain aspects of our society, including psychiatry, the social welfare bureau... morecracy, private schools, new age sexual freedom, the surveillence apparatus, and more. You'll learn much about Richard Nixon, who represents the cusp of change between Harry's preferred older values and the America we have become today.Often funny, and often heartwarming. I loved the children, and their role in showing Harry the path to maturity. Some may think them unrealistic, but I taught college, and had young people, rarely, with their advanced wisdom. Enjoy-- and come away with possibly a tear.
review 2: Fairly amazing book. The darkest thing I've enjoyed and found funny in a long time. Not recommended if you don't want any of the following professions to be portrayed in a bad light: professor, lawyer, network head, full-time mom, psychiatrist, social worker, insurance salesman, private-school administrator, teacher, or arms dealer.
