I’m almost at the end of 2016. Yeah! Week 50 covers December 12 – 18. As always, feedback is encouraged. Let me know what you think. Or if you’re short of time, simply clicking like will do.
A Killer Location by Sarah T. Hobart – I received this as an e-book from the publisher via NetGalley. It is Home Sweet Home #2. This was fun. It’s also pretty complicated for a cozy mystery. I was listening to it in my car (kindle text to speech is my friend) and I found the ending a little hard to follow. Otherwise, this was quite enjoyable and if cozy mysteries are your thing, this is definitely for you. I’m giving it 3 stars.
Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine – I borrowed this as an e-book from the Boston Public Library. This is The Great Library #1. This is a book about books (in case you need one of those for the 2017 Read Harder Challenge). In this, the library controls the flow of knowledge to the masses. There are no printing presses. It is all done manually, or through magic. Rare books are sold on the black market. There are wars and whatnot that result. I’m going to confess my weird love for this author now. I had a mild obsession with the Morganville Vampires series. Don’t judge. I may never have given this a second glance otherwise. But I thought it was great and I’m giving it 4 stars.
We Thought You Would Be Prettier by Laurie Notaro – I borrowed this as an e-book from the BPL. I started reading this author because the titles are funny. The book is a bunch of very funny stories about stupid shit that has happened to the author. From losing her wallet in a taxi while on a book tour, to being locked out of the house in the sweltering heat, to a cashier at a pet store with Farrah Fawcett hair (a dude). She’s just very funny and she writes well. This is quite entertaining. I’m giving it 3 stars.
Mr g by Alan Lightman – I borrowed this as an e-book from the BPL. The best part about this is how short it is. This is a novel about creation, as in the creation of the universe. It’s an interesting perspective. I’m giving it 2 stars.
A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry – I borrowed this as an e-book from the BPL. This is a play and a well known classic. This is about what it is like to be poor and African American. In the 1950s. This was impressive and it makes me a little sad that the author died at the age of 35. I think everyone should read this. The fact that this is the first time I read it say something about the sorry state of the high school curriculum I was subjected to as a teen. I’m giving it 3 stars.
Summer Days and Summer Nights by Stephanie Perkins et al. – I received this as an actual book via a Goodreads giveaway. This was really good. The authors that contributed stories are all amazing. Even the ones I hadn’t heard of were really good. I would definitely recommend this, even if you don’t normally read short story collections. This is also a great way to discover new authors. I’m giving it 4 stars.
And there you go. Week 50. Let me know if you have any opinions or have any suggestions about what I should read next.
