review 1: This is one of those books that I just bought because I had a gift card for Barnes and Nobles. Picked this up thinking it was a mermaid book, but it ended up being about an alien species that can shapeshift. They're sea monsters. This had so much potential. I was disappointed. Nerissa lives among humans until she can reclaim her throne. She gets challenged by her rival for the kingdom of Waterfell. She falls in love with a supposedly human boy (who is also an Aquarathi). She instantly falls in love with Lo. Speio was a distasteful character, I found his presence incredibly annoying. The only character I actually liked was Jenna. You eventually find out the boy she loves was trying to get her to fall for him and bond with him. Ugh. Not cool. Another thing I disliked is when ... moreyou found out Nerissa's mother betrayed her husband because she bonded with another female Aqurathi, Ehmora, who just happens to be Nerissa's sworn enemy. I thought the premise was interesting and I thought it moved quickly enough. It's a decent read, but I don't think I'll be picking up a sequel. Too much about this book just annoyed me.
review 2: Amalie Howard’s Waterfell is a wonderfully wet and wild ride. Nerissa, the teenage narrator is an alien sea goddess-princess who, for reasons too complicated and revealing to go into in this review, is hanging out in human form in the surf-centric town of La Jolla, California. She’s an alpha chick; star athlete, and kick-ass surfer who’s gorgeous, smart, and yeah, a bit taken with herself. One of the best things about Waterfell is how Nerissa develops from complex and flawed to lovable and heroic, and I’m talking BIG TIME heroics. Also impressive is how Howard ‘World’ creates. Every detail of this fantasy feels credible, the pseudo-science has you nodding your head and going along for the ride. The plot has unpredictable twists and turns, the relationships feel authentic, the characters are complex. As a surfer and a writer about surfing, I was impressed with Howard’s descriptions of the sport and waves, as she gets the rhythm and pace of an ocean-dance that’s hard to describe to the non-surfer. All in all a great book. I can’t wait for the sequel, Oceanborn, due out in 2014! less

The main character needs to get some backbone. She's so desperate, it's sad.
