review 1: Best book I've read in ages. Downum has created a convincing fantasy world complete with believable details and lingo. On top of that, the plot is interesting from the beginning to the end, with no slack, and there a range of complex focalising characters, with a preferred focus on the compassionate rather than the mad or evil. Downum has also created a world where gender and sexual orientation are open, reminiscent of Tanya Huff's Quarters series and Sherwood Smith's Inda series. The only character who didn't gel for me was the king's spymaster, whose changing motivations didn't make sense to me. Possibly this was because I came into the series with this second book, but I didn't get the impression I'd missed any major explanations, since his motivations are ostensib... morely only revealed in this novel. I look forward to reading more of this competent and interesting author.
review 2: I enjoyed this book--the setting and magic were well-developed and portrayed. I read a lot of the book in huge stretches because I was able to picture myself in the world so well. I also loved many of the characters and the diversity of them. There were a lot of non-traditional relationships, as well as cast members, and I liked that they were perfectly natural. By that, I mean the characters themselves were whole. They were not defined by those particular identity markers. The plot is engaging, and readers have be involved to put the pieces together.Overall, a greatly imagined story. less

A book full of names I can't pronounce. The story on the other hand was readable.
