review 1: This was a wonderful book. Janusz Novak goes off to join the Polish Army at the beginning of World War II, leaving his wife and baby son Aurek behind in Warsaw. They are not reunited until six years later, when he is living in Ipswich, England, and he initiates a missing persons search for them through the British Army. I'll say no more, except that the characters are well-developed, and the story reads like real life.
review 2: I don't know why I always go into the pages of a new book expecting it to be anything but simply what it is, but I think as readers we all, at some point in our lives, settle into requisites, as though our anticipation is earlier fulfilled by some great title that first activated the motion of gears in our souls, and we function now onl
... morey in the same rhythm the book originally set, like rocking pendulums - dependent upon old favorites to form our expectations of new authors and poets, turning through titles like clockwork. I think this is why we're so usually disappointed and greatly delighted when a book performs beyond our expectation. We'd be less likely to frown on some books, if we gave them a fresh chance, to begin with.Is this book like the first that stirred my own imagination, or similar in any way to a book I formed devoted affection for? No. It is like no other.Which is all I am rightly entitled to expect of any book.Thank you for reminding me of that, 22 Britannia Road. You were unexpected, and I enjoyed your story.I recommend you.Well done, Amanda Hodgkinson - you wrote so well, your novel is a personification - not just a book, it would better be termed: a wanderer....That has happily landed among my NEW favorites. If you're combing through the reviews, trying to decide whether or not to read it -Give it a chance. And then make room on your shelf - You will certainly give it a home. less
