review 1: A good holiday read, but perhaps a little disappointing after What Have I Done?. Although I liked the main characters in this, Pru and Christopher, the story seemed too rushed and in some places contrived. I thought there would have been much more detail on Pru's past, the links with CM etc. Are we really to believe that CM wouldn't have seen the tabloid press before he contacted her? Surely not. But nice to see romance and happy endings.
review 2: I eagerly awaited this novel and when it arrived, we stayed together for an afternoon and two evenings until I reached the finale. And it was wonderful! This is a beautiful love story with an unconventional protagonist - a woman in her sixties with a slightly colourful past. Hooray for the more mature ladies! What I
... moreliked most was that just as I settled in to what seemed a straightforward story at the start, the author took me in an entirely unexpected direction with twists aplenty - the kind that make you have to keep turning pages and find out where it will all lead. All the ingredients of a great book. This is lovely and yes, there is lots of cake and I tasted all of them! I agree with a previous reviewer, this also reminded me of Joanne Harris's Chocolat and I felt in the writing there were shades of the wonderful foodie elements in Eat Pray Love. I love cake and I like a bit of romantic escapism so this was pure decadence - an indulgence for me. Time to myself, feet up, immersing myself in a gorgeous, love story from a wonderful story teller. A real treat. I was immersed - mystery, smooching, a happy ever after and CAKE. CAKE!!! Gorgeous literary escapism. Do it!! When does the film come out? less
