The Amanda Project
review 1: Three high school strangers come together to solve a puzzle left by a quirky common friend. If I had to give this book points based on the printing alone, it would have FIVE STARS, straight up. The cover seems like a painting you see at a museum and its pages are laden with flower vines (???) which give you sort of a Secret Garden feeling where you know you're bound to go through mysterious passages and find both nice and unpleasant surprises. While I would like to bank on the engaging plot of this first book in a series, the actual flow seemed too dragging. Like the authors meant for the characters to be sooooo sloooow in picking up clues to get to the bottom of Amanda's disappearance. Yes, I think it's fine to leave some questions behind - that's how you build a series - b... moreut when I finished the book, I didn't feel like wanting to pick up the next one AND THEREFORE, SUSTAINABILITY = ZERO.
review 2: Premise: Amanda has disappeared, leaving behind three of her friends to find her. The thing is, it isn't as if she's actually fallen off the face of the earth; she's obviously still around town to the point of leaving clues for them each day, whether it's on their school lockers or (creepy, much?) in their bedrooms. It's actually super frustrating to read, because it's like she's playing with her friends' emotions, making one very long, drawn-out dramatic overture for attention. The whole concept of missing persons and following the clues and the intrigue is pretty captivating-- until you remember that this story revolves around a group of high school freshman, at which point it simply becomes not only unrealistic (do they not have homework?), but also seemingly downright irresponsible. Sure, it can be clever, but it quickly becomes annoying. less
