Before & After
review 1: FaithFor all her life, Faith has tried to fit the mold that she thinks people expect her to be. With a father that is a pastor, it seems that Faith is always concerned about what her family thinks of her and what the people of her church think of her as well. To maintain this facade, Faith chooses to dress conservatively, date a boy that also goes to her church, and at all times hide who she really is.DiegoDiego is running from his past. Growing up in Cuba was not easy for many reasons. Because of that, Diego chose to make the Cartel part of his life in order to provide for his family and also achieve some safety. When Diego decides he no does not want to start selling drugs, the Cartel turns on him and tries to kill him and his family. Now, Diego is living in the St... moreates where he spent some of his summers in Florida. He too is hiding who he is in order to protect those he loves. On the first day of school, Diego is paired with Faith to be shown around school and get acquainted. Diego really wants nothing to do with this "gringa", but he doesn't have much of a choice. Faith cannot help but feel an attraction to this mysterious tattooed boy that is now at her school. What starts as a timid attraction soon turns into much more, and before long the two have to come to terms with their feelings for one another. Told between alternating chapters, readers get a chance to hear both Faith and Diego's most intimate thoughts about what is happening in their lives and with one another. While I enjoyed the story, it did feel a little like other books I have read before. It reminded me of Elkeles "Perfect Chemistry" series, but with Hart's novel the characters fell a little flat. The voices sometimes did not match the person that was narrating and I found that to be a little distracting. In the end though, I never stopped reading. I'm now moving on to "After us" which I'll be reviewing for VOYA.
review 2: It pained me to finish this book but I wanted to read the whole thing so I could be fair when reviewing. In short, this is a trashy teen romance. In long, this is the kind of book that gives Young Adult and New Adult a bad name. It was poorly written, overblown, and incredibly heavy-handed when dealing with issues of race, class, and religion. The story structure is almost non-existent. The story drags slowly for a length of time while the two main characters, Faith and Diego, circle each other. Then, several "plot" climaxes arrive one after another, twist after twist. Sadly, these twists make each other redundant rather than making the story more exciting.I love YA/NA romance but this was so poorly written I couldn't enjoy it. less
