review 1: It sucks to be a woman in the 19th centuryIt's been a really long time since I've read an historical romance. This one was okay. I liked Melissa, she was a strong woman with few choices, mostly because she was a woman. Her father left her and her brother (who was a really annoying character) with no money, so she chooses to auction her virginity for money to escape London. James (the man who "buys" her) thinks she's lovely and wants to make her his mistress.I had a hard time liking James, his treatment of Melissa was awful. Sure, he was gentle with her, but that was just because he wanted to get laid. He thought she was beneath him in intelligence and social standing and was constantly trying to get under her skirts. I wasn't really rooting for the two of them to end up to... moregether, but I felt sorry for Melissa as she had so few options. His abrupt change of heart near the end did not ring true at all.
review 2: Melissa needs to save herself and her brother from a loan shark. Her father had some bad dealings with Black Jack and he has come to collect. Now Melissa has to sell her virtue to the highest bidder to raise money so she and her brother can escape. James saves her from a nasty encounter and then he falls for her. Now they must find her missing brother. And see to Black Jack getting what he deserves. It's an adventure and a love story. less

3.0 Stars. It was a good storyline, but the repetition of the inner dialog was distracting to me.
