review 1: في أكتوبر 2012، كُنت أُحضَّر موضوعاً في ذكرى شهداء محمد محمود، أحد أكثر ما تبقى في قلبي هو والدة الشهيد "محمد بشر أنور" وهي تحكي عن تأخره، وذهابها للبحث عنه، وقتها وصفت ذلك بأنها "تلك الليلة التي لن تنساها، والتي قضتها تُلاحق الأمل الذي يتضاءل بوجوده حياً، هرولت إلى التحرير حين تأخر وأخبرها أحد أصدقاءه أنه هناك، دعت أن تجده في الشارع وبين الناس ولم تجده، فدعت أن تجده بين المصابين في المستفياتِ ولم تجده، فذهبت إلى المشرحة وهي تدعو أ... moreلا تجده، ووجدته."في الرواية، وسط رحلة "أم مهدي" للبحثِ عنه.. كنت أرى وأتذكر أم بشر، وأزداد تعلقاً بما يحدث هناك كأنه قد حدث هنا، حتى قالت لقريبة: "هل تتخيلين أنني ذهبت للبحث عنه في المستشفى وأنا أتمنى أن أجده هناك". وقتها اكتملت الصورة والوصل.طوال السنوات الماضية كنت أحب إيران كثيراً، صنعت لها صورة مثالية من الشعر والأفلام والموسيقى، أردت تعلُّم الفارسية، والعيش هناك لفترة. الرواية مُفزعة لأنها أنزلت كل ذلك على الأرض، تحديداً عند ذكر "ندى سلطان"، شعرتُ بإيران أقرب وأبعد في نفس الوقت.الرواية ليست عظيمة بمقاييسٍ فنية، مباشرة أحياناً وخطابية في أحيانٍ أخرى، ولكنها تملك ما هو أكثر من ذلك، الشحنة العاطفية الشديدة للرحلة، والوصل الموجود طوال الوقت لشدة ما يشبهوننا، ينقطع الخيط الفارق بين الخيال والحقيقة، ويُصبح عملاً عن التاريخ والثورة وذكريات الغائبين.الهوامش كانت مُهمة لهذا الغرض، حين انتهت القصة نفسها كنت أنوي تقييمها بـ4، الهوامش.. إدراك المؤلف والرسام لدائرية التاريخ.. ملامسة ريم وأحمد للشَبة والوصل، الحكايات الجانبية عمن غيَّبتهم الثورة، الإهداء في الصفحةِ الأولى، والـ16 ألف اسماً في الصفحات الأخيرة، كل ذلك كل له معنى.. معنى عَظيم موصول تماماً بالمتن الرئيسي.
review 2: Zahra’s Paradise is a beautiful, moving story about the repercussions of the tumultuous election in Iran 2009. The story follows a courageous mother of a boy who, like so many, disappears after taking part in the demonstrations that followed the election. Through her and her younger son's struggles with everything from grueling bureaucracy to the violent actions of an all-out dictatorship, to find out what has actually happened, the author and the artist paints a bleak but still somehow hopeful picture of Iran today. As a privileged citizen in a country where we have had free speech, free elections, freedom of the press and so on for generations, it's really a slap in the face to read this vivid, engaging story, which makes the horrid stories that you see in the news become personal and thus graspable, understandable. In this aspect, Zahra’s Paradise is a resounding success. It's impossible not to compare this book to another great graphic novel made by another expatriate Iranian, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. Amir and Khalil are in some ways more proficient in what they do, and their comics have a more traditional, look to them, making more use of the visual storytelling techniques that are unique to comics. In a way, this comes between me and the experience of the story, whereas the more direct style of Persepolis only made for an even more immersive experience. But this is a minor quibble. There are of course similarities, but also many differences between Zahra’s Paradise and Persepolis, but both are a great read and comes very highly recommended. less
