review 1: This is the story of two sisters, Iris and Eva, and their lives before, during and after WW2. Iris has a burning ambition to be a star, via any medium that will accept her; Eva's ambitions are muted in comparison as she stumbles through the years attracting adversity and the occasional moment of treasure. Something didn't gel for me about this novel: too episodic?, the absence of Iris, by far the more interesting sister, from much of the narrative? I didn't really care about any of the characters, however the book arrives with high praise, so Reader, chance your arm.

... moreheir fortunes in Hollywood. Dramas follow; the girls get caught up in the sultry, superficial goings on of Tinsel Town only to crash hard. With their friend, make-up artist Francisco, and their father who returns down on his luck, they head back East for new lives, new friends, and new tragedies. Along the hilly trajectory of the plot, Bloom weaves in racism and injustice in ways that make these sad, tired truths freshly painful. Although the title of this sharp, touching novel seems ironic for much of the narrative, in the end, Bloom's characters make the most of what comes their way, mercifully in ways that nobody could call heart-warming. less

This is a quirky story about two sisters. I enjoyed it but didn't like it enough to rave about it.
