From the time its founders William and Catherine Booth dreamt of bringing salvation to the poor, destitute, and hungry by meeting both their physical and spiritual needs, the organization has been serving people passionately, with a worldwide membership that now stands 1.5 million strong.
In 1865, preacher William Booth essentially started a significant movement as the East London Christian Mission. By 1878, ready with a more structured agenda, Booth reorganized the mission, making himself the institution’s first General. This turned into the Salvation Army, whose military structure strengthened the organization and boosted its longevity.
It runs under a religious philosophy, with a Methodist theology and a Protestant evangelical framework. The Salvation Army operates with a conscious purpose, which is to advance the Christian religion, through education, the relief of poverty, and any means that would benefit humanity.
On the ground, its volunteers embrace the opportunity to do justice, no matter how small. Any individual who comes to them in need of something to make him whole, whether it is one with a lonely soul or one with a hungry stomach, is accommodated by volunteers.
The Salvation Army also exacts a much bigger presence in more challenging crises. They are among the first to respond to communities hit with huge natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes.
In the words of current General Andre Cox, “I dream of an Army where all cultures are equally accepted and celebrated through the spiritual ties that bind us all together.”
This explains why they reach far and wide, solving other peoples’ problems as they come. This is their noble cause.
