review 1: Can Rebecca be an Amish mother to two English girls?I cannot imagine what it takes to write such a book as this… Amy Clipston has an amazing capacity for creating the perfect scenario! It is perfect! A woman who left the Amish faith leaves instructions for her children to return to the family home if anything should happen to her.. and does Amy take the easy way out? Nope.A Gift of Grace is a wonderful story about two sisters, forced to live with their Aunt and Uncle in an Amish community, after they lose their parents. One sister flourishes… the other perishes! Or at least she feels like she’s been banished to another century, where there’s no electricity, no phones, and no friends – only stupid rules!I was caught up in the story almost from the beginning… abou... moret the time Jessica notices the not-so-pleasing smells coming from the farm. What a nightmare! The strange thing is – I live in an apartment with electricity, computers, phones, music, air conditioning and I have 2 vehicles to choose from whenever I want to go somewhere – why did I identify more with Lindsay, the slightly younger sister who felt at home on the farm and blossomed there. Why didn’t I feel more like Jessica, who missed all the technology – and freedom?I’ll admit… when trouble brewed, I didn’t really feel sorry for Jessica – but I did want to smack a few people and say, “hey, what happened to showing a little love and compassion? –Stop making mountains out of mole hills!”But God has a way of dealing with people, especially when they’re thinking too much of themselves, instead of showing His love to those who need it. Amy follows right along with these thoughts and although it took me by surprise, it certainly shakes up the community.I love this book SO much, I gave away a copy!
review 2: A Gift of GraceSometimes trying so hard to accomplish something will bring pain to those we love. That is what happen when Rebecca Kauffman becomes the guardian to Jessica and Lindsay, her sister’s two teenaged girls. Not only have the girls lost both of their parents but they are English. Their world is not only turned upside-down but their ways clash with the Amish. Will everyone find a happy middle ground or will things stay in turmoil? This book not only was a great read but it really had me thinking about my walk with God and how I listen to him. Each character showed me different perspectives of walking with the Lord. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. less
