review 1: "The Jewel" definitely reminded me a little bit of "The Hunger Games" and "The Chemical Garden" trilogy.Violet is now known as 197. She is a surrogate that is going to have the royalty's baby. But she is also special. She can do things that other surrogates can't do, and she is going to do all of this for the Duchess. Everyone in the novel describe Violet as strong. I would agree with that statement. She has a way about her that won't let her be bullied into things. She also knows how to pick her battles, something that is very important in this society. She is smart and she is also very loyal. She tries to protect her friends from all of the horrors that they face. The one thing that I didn't like about the book was the romance. It wasn't eye-roll, but it was close. Again... more, I feel like the romance was too fast and whirlwind. I also feel like we don't know a lot about Ash. My problem with these whirlwind romances can be summed up by the fact that I don't feel that you can love someone without knowing them. Now, that is just my opinion on romance and I'm sure there are many people who would disagree with me on that point. I accept that. I just feel that there was really no friend part to their relationship, they just both jumped in. I would have liked to see a little bit more of a friendship before they began to date. I also would have liked just a little bit more information on how the world of "The Jewel" works. I feel like we are missing big parts of society and important history. Even though I get that some of those points will be used in future novels as big reveals, I feel like the readers would benefit from a little bit more information on how the world works and some more of the history then we got.All in all, I quite enjoyed this novel. I felt like it was a hybrid novel of "The Hunger Games" series towards the beginning of the novel. I'm interested into seeing what happens next in this series and where Ewing will be taking Violet and her world next.
review 2: Hey guys ! This is a review I did for my blog booksterrambler.wordpress.comA bit of background before diving in the main plot… This story takes place in a society were the City is divided into 5 circles : the Marsh, the Farm, the Smoke, the Bank and The Jewel.A genetic mishap occurs that renders the noblewomen & royals unable to bear there own children. However, a select few girls from the City’s poorest district : the March can. They have to get tested at puberty, and those found with the gene required to be surrogate are sent to training facilities where they have classes on etiquette, history of the royals and so on. When they are deemee ready, they are sent off to The Jewel to be sold in The Auction, a ceremony were the royals (and a few rich non-royals) bid on them as they were lots. This story follows the journey of Violet, a surrogate that is to be purchased by a powerful royal looking to have a daughter. Violet is stubborn and refuse to be forced by the system. She doesn’t believe in the Auction, and refuses to bear another woman’s child, while being treated like an object by her Mistress. When I started the book, I really got sucked into it. The plot was kinda cool, with surrogates, royals, and so on. It really was working for me, until the romance came up. It really just didn’t do it for me. When she met the guy, I was pretty much like : ‘Seriously ?’.However, I chose to ignore that and just carry on with it (I was already in, so why stop ?) until it started getting better again. And just so you know, the last few paragraphs have a really interesting plot twist! It had some moments were it felt a liiittle like ‘The Selection’ (by Kiera Cass), and the use of the Cello kept bringing me back to ‘If I Stay’ (by Gayle Forman), but overall, this book was rather enjoyable. I won’t be waiting desperately for the sequel but I’ll probably pick it up to see if I want to go ahead with it.This story had some interesting part, so I would invite you to try it and see for yourself how you like it. less
