review 1: An absolute gem of a character study. While not my favorite genre, this novel set in the Tennessee River Valley in the thirties, sucked me in from the very beginning and rewarded me with an enveloping read. You know, wondering about what the characters are doing when you're not actually reading the book, and dying to get back to it. It also sparked my interest in exploring what happened locally when the Quabbin reservoir killed a town here in Massachusetts. Deft handling of a very interesting subject, Highly recommend this book to everyone.
review 2: Long Man by Amy Greene, is the story of a family who must choose whether to leave their small town of Uneeta, Tennessee in 1936. The story revolves around the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) taking steps to dam t
... morehe local river and flood the area. The river plays a major role in this book, giving and taking lives based on what appear to be its cruel whims. In the midst of this drama is a young mother who refuses to leave the land she views as her daughter's inheritance. She is further torn by her husband's ambition to move North to fulfill his dreams. Tension builds after a dangerous drifter returns to the area and reaches a fever pitch when the mother's child, Gracie, disappears. The story then turns to the search for Gracie and the effect her disappearance has on those still left in the area. Greene's writing throughout is so lovely and lyrical that I hated to see the story end. I enthusiastically recommend this book to other readers. less
