review 1: My favorite librarian recommended this book to me, as I seem to gravitate toward books where the plight of women is at the forefront of the story. The Seven Perfumes of Sacrifice taught me so much about honor killings, about what it is to be female in a part of the world that is so far removed from my comfortable life in NY where women have equal rights and many opportunities, one being able to openly express herself in art. This book broke my heart, for Leila, for the silence around her killing and that this happens every day. I hope Logan takes less than a decade to write her sophomore novel.
review 2: My first time through this disturbing book I got sick of the apparent reality of the shocking lot of Druze women. I packed in reading half-way and gave it a
... moreone-star rating. A bit like an Oxfam emergency crisis appeal, it's not much fun and, hang on a minute, I'm reading for pleasure/leisure here! The realness is so intense that I find it hard to believe that it's a novel. Disappointingly there is no explanation at the end to tell us whether there is truth in any of it, barring the very lifelike final chapter telling us where everyone ended up. So please tell us Ms Logan, is it based on real events? If it's all true, then we all need to go and fight a Holy War to save these women. less
