review 1: I have always loved Amy Tan's work but this one felt different. . . and disappointing. Themes of mother and daughters, separation and misfortune. A LOT of detail about the courtesan life in Shanghai in the early 20th century- really, too much, that it felt at times almost like reading pornography. I'm not sure the point of it all- oppression of women? difficult choices to survive? Too long, too.
review 2: Did not enjoy this book as much as other books by the same author. The story line jumps back and forth between the two main characters and mixes different time frames in their lives. Chapters require dates to help you keep things straight. I guess this tactic may be necessary to keep from giving away the whole plot from the beginning, but overall I found
... more it more convoluted than it needed to be... less
