review 1: Better than I thought. Very dystopian. Amazing world-building. Creative characters. Very well done. I was particularly happy with the first part of the novel and then...They entered that village...and this amazing story got converted into every other PNR novel I've come across. Turns out all I thought was unique about this plot wasn't really that unique, just seemed to be. The beast isn't really a beast just a normal shifter. The dystopian world we got to know isn't really that exclusive or rare 'cause there's a whole normal world just outside waiting. Raine, this amazing outcast "human" who can generate life turns out to be just another submissive guy without much power. Talk of being each others lives suddenly became talks of high councils, alphas, tribes, ect...more pol... moreitics. End up with a pretty HEA and that's a wrap.I'd give a four star rating to the first 2/3 of this book. The rest isn't really good.
review 2: Hm, on one hand I liked the idea behind setting of the book - controlling government which has forbidden anything natural like plants and has strict rules about everything that everybody has to follow to the dot or beind executed or imprisoned, guy who is able to let plants grow and talk to them and they talk to him, shifters who seems to have a very interesting society and some more things but on the other hand - absolute no consideration for the abuse Raine (and Ash!) went through and insta!mating + insta!love. *sighs* Is it really that hard to give characters time to heal and to fall in love? Also, there were hints to an enthralling society - the one Raine came from as well as the shifter one but we don't get to see much of them. Which makes me very sad because why do you imagine such societies and then only give us the barest hints of it? I think these things would have enriched the story a lot but, well, they sadly weren't there. :( less
