review 1: Everyone loves a good story, and writer Anchee Min's material is the best, a rags-to-riches, East-to-West story that you can't put down. Some writers may have a more polished style, but Anchee Min's compelling story more than makes up for it. This is the story of Anchee Min's rise from a labor camp during the Chinese Cultural Revolution to an immigrant in Chicago who spoke no English, to a famous, award-winning writer. She did not plan to be a writer; but she needed a green card to stay in the U.S., so she painstaking taught herself English as an adult by watching children's television shows and studying Jane Eyre with the aid of a dictionary, and began writing her own books to teach U.S. readers about China. This book is an antidote to cynicism and hopelessness. I will le... moret you discover the rest; if you pick up this book, you will not be disappointed.
review 2: not my favorite Min book but author autobiographies are always enlightening. Min's story is very honest and even a bit frank and blunt at times. I actually laughed out loud when Min wrote how art students kept asking her about communism and they didn't believe her when she told them "it didn't work." (note Min lived through the Cultural Revolution in China and came to the US in the early 80s) less
