review 1: Great book....the way the author narrated the story, it seems that she was with Pearl Buck all along....I read The Good Earth when I was still a child, and all along I thought that the story was written based on Pearl Buck's imagination and basic knowledge of China and its people.Till I read Pearl of China, then only I realised that Pearl Buck had been more Chinese than American. How Pearl Buck had pit her heart and soul to China, and how she had wished to go back to China. Pearl of China too had given me some insight on the wars and revolution in China, and the communist party.Though this is the first book by Anchee Min that I had read, I sincerely feel that Anchee Min is a marvellous writer and great storyteller, for being able to bring the characters to life through h... moreer writings.
review 2: at first I was disappointed that the story wasn't told from third person, but later I appreciated the friendship angle even if it seemed like the book became more about Willow than Pearl. I know it is fictionalized but I guess that motivates me more to explore the truth. I listened to the book and the reader did a wonderful job with vocalizations and singing Chinese songs. the book also reminded me a little of The Little Woman, Gladys Aylward...who would have been a contemporary of Buck's. less
