review 1: A story of the importance of girlhood friendship told via an odd format of email and letter exchanges interspersed with recipes titled to capture the feeling of the correspondence: "Mighty Math Muffins" to help Lilly learn math by converting recipes, "Better Late Than Never Zucchini Quickbread" when Val is running late for class. Clever. But the story is frustrating. As often happens, one person seems to give more to the relationship than the other...and ends up being hurt/betrayed. In this case, however, the one who gives and gives, is mocked and ridiculed by the other, the one maintaining the relationship becomes the "betrayer." In an honest effort to help her best friend, Val's intervention turns out to be the benevolent act that allows Lilly's permanent exit from the re... morelationship. Val innocently builds another wall between Lilly and the one man whose love she endlessly pursues--Isaac, her father. The twist at the end seems too dramatic...and contrived. I mean, wouldn't Val, an educated geneticist immediately run DNA tests to check her paternity? Could Val and Lilly not have reconciled some other way? Maybe some other adult way like talking face-to-face about the situation that separated them?
review 2: Ok, I'm not sure why so many people are down on this book. I couldn't put it down! Maybe it's because I have had ups and downs with my own best friend over the 2 and a half decades we've been friends. Or maybe it's that I loved actually reading letters that seem very real to life in a day in age when no one writes letters anymore. Maybe it was the juicy gossip exchanged between Val and Lilly. Or it could have been the underlying mystery behind their falling out. No matter! In any case, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to trying out some of the recipes. less
