review 1: I’d give it a 3.5 as I’m not sure how I feel about this book. The brutality of WWI was unbearably depicted as the narrator Jozef, becomes a Slav sharpshooter in that conflict (and a very good shot he was!) but his initial unemotional attitude toward this killing was off putting. Yet the writing was affecting and powerful, almost mystical, as Jozef eventually finds some measure of redemption, though the memories will never leave him.
review 2: short book. set during WWI of which I know very little. I would read other books by this author. certai
... moren details made me chuckle, such as the comment when he is in a prison and is called Russky by the guards because all Slavs are Russians. less
