review 1: I can say with some conviction that this book is the closest I will EVER get to exploring philosophy with a capital "P". The more accessible sections of the book look at concepts like "authentic" Italian restaurants...do they exist? CAN they exist? Pop culture riffs include Mad Men and Matrix references, alongside "vintage" Levi's, the question of whether Avril Lavigne can or cannot actually ride a skateboard, and "fictional" memoirs a la Oprah's book club. When one of the dust jacket reviews called Potter's book "breathtaking in scope", it was no joke. For the most part, this book is not easy summer reading, and that's probably where it's rating suffered, in my hands. I took it poolside and had to reread most of it when I could be a bit more focused. A working knowledge ... moreof Rousseau, Locke, Plato, andd Sir Francis Bacon et al would be helpful!
review 2: This book does demonstrate the abundance of "authentic spinsters" that proliferate the marketing world of today as "authenticity" is used to provide a sense of comfort and originality to today's consumer. Authenticity is defined as being genuine and this is the core of his argument. He puts forth some good examples of how we can be defrauded into making judgement calls through false information in what seems to be the trending word to sell an idea or product.A decent read so far. less
