review 1: again, i love small bore biographies. they can be illuminating without being tedious, especially where one already knows something about the subject. in that sense, this book is good, but i was bothered to see some biographical details gotten wrong or in other cases important information omitted. to choose one example, the entry for plato conflates his views on relationships with socrates' statements in the republic. this is wrong on its own terms; a biography of plato cannot be based on the dialogues in the first instance. but it also misses what plato had socrates and others say in the phaedrus, the symposium, and rival lovers (though in fairness the first two are mentioned by name but are not discussed).
review 2: Well I bought this book to find how philosop
... morehers coped with failing relationships and what were their views on failing at love. After reading it, I can say I enjoyed very much but I was waiting for more information about philosophers' promiscuity. Nevertheless, I found myself to be in the same league with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and resolved on how les mots allowed a cross-eyed person like Jean Paul Sartre have such a rich love life... less

Quirky, informative, and at times, quite outrageous and shocking.
