review 1: The world building was intriguing and the initial set up had potential. It began with the third person perspective of Val, a human who hates vampires determined to solve a series of murders she believes to be perpetrated by vampires. I had no problem with her perspective and most likely would have finished the book had it been entirely though her viewpoint. But then we switch perspectives to Kade a two hundred year old vampire who has the rare ability to change humans to vampires, which is his primary duty and something he loathes. This is where I started struggling. His viewpoint is a mess. He alternates between viewing the world in purple prose like thinking Val's eyes are so lovely they have to be heaven sent and crude modern metaphors like he wanted her to ride him like... more a rodeo cowboy. His viewpoint seemed more in line with a poorly educated horny teenager then a worldly two hundred year old being. He speaks in a odd mixture of crude slang drawn from different demographics that could have been funny if written with more creativity and something that Kade did it to amuse himself but the way it was presented made it was just weird and off-putting. The behavior of the characters and their over the top angry responses seemed to come out of left field making the character interactions seem forced and unbelievable. I really thought that since this is so short I would just solider though but by a quarter of the way in I just couldn't take any more of it.
review 2: Valerie is a bureaucrat in the Vampire Liason Office. The office approves and oversees humans' transformations into vampires. Val, however, inspired by her ex-husband, who was obsessed with being transformed, has been focused on promoting legislation to ban vampire transformations. Now she and her partner, who is a lawyer, are investigating a series of murders, because they appear to be committed by illegaly transformed vampires. She goes to the vampire king to request assistance in the investigation and gets Kade. Kade is the vampire prince, but doesn't act like it. He is casual, crude and not fond of humans. He's also involved in some investigations of his own that he's keeping from both Val and the king. Over the course of their case, Val and Kade uncover traitors and conspiracies and of course, an attraction to each other. There are some things I really like about this book. Kade's crew, who it appears will be the heroes of later books, are all interesting. Kade's potty mouth and his dirty mind are often entertaining (though he keeps threatening kinky sex, but doesn't follow through.) The relationship between Kade and Val is spontaneous, but believable. There are also some elements that didn't work for me. A character changes sides and the timeline and motive for that are not really clear. Valerie's legislation comes up again at the end, and it seems like an afterthought. This is an OK start to the series for me. There are good characters to build on and repercussions from this story to deal with. I'm not going to rush right into it, but I probably will check out Bad Cop, the next book in the series.I won this book in an online contest. less
