review 1: One of my friends recommended this author to me, let me tell you how very happy I am that she did! What a very , very good book! I felt as if I was there, the details so vivid I could close my eyes and see everything! The characters were great. Alyssa was a human woman that Lysander found beaten , dying about to be raped and saved her by turning her into a vampire. Alyssa's journey into acceptance is very believable and Lysanders role as an ancient vampire all was spot on! I loved the ups and downs which ultimately bring them together. Add a vengeful ex in the mix and a crazy fanatical sect and you have the making of a great series! I need more of this couple and am definately putting this author on my must have list!
review 2: I've kind of mixed feelings about
... more this book. On the one hand, it was a well written, well thought out take on a genre that has been done to death. On the other, there were a couple of things in there that niggled at me. So I've given it four stars, though that might change if I reread it some time.I did like the mythos the author built up over the course of the book. There was a good combination of ideas that worked well together, even if some of them have been seen before (morals means only draining criminals/bad folks, vampire hunters, etc.) There was a ton of good world building, though that did leave me feeling that, after the initial horror of the attack that leaves Alyssa at the point of death, there's not a huge amount of action then until the final few chapters. The attack was one of the things that bothered me. Or, more specifically, Alyssa's reactions afterwards. OK, maybe dying and being turned into a vampire trumps being violently sexually assaulted, but I felt like little attention was paid to that violent sexual aspect after the fact. Alyssa does have to come to terms with being newly dead, but surely such an attack would have a huge emotional impact as well? It was a refreshing change to get the perspective of a newly turned vampire though, as she realises that her entire old life is gone and she can't go back. Likewise, Alyssa very quickly learns that while she may have many advantages over vanilla humans, she certainly doesn't when it comes to older vampires. The story is first person from Alyssa's point of view, but unfortunately, although she is 25 years old, in some ways she is very childish. Admittedly her entire life has changed, but some of her reactions border on brattish, and she often seems to be as stubborn as possible even when there is no real reason to be that way. Of course, often her stubborness subsequently lands her in trouble, and then the fairly much ever patient and ancient Lysander has to get her out of it. I didn't dislike Alyssa, I guess, but her behaviour did induce a certain amount of eye rolling. I wish that more focus had been given to the other characters in the book, particularly Lysander and Edmond, as some of their motives were a bit unclear. Perhaps later books in the series will devote a bit more attention to them and others.Overall I enjoyed it, and may well continue with the series at some point. If it hadn't been for the couple of areas I was a bit iffy about, it would have been at least four and a half stars, if not five. less
