review 1: Picked up off the library shelf because it looked interesting. Easy, quick read. Not intellectually challenging. Not offensive (no sex, politics, etc). Comfortable read.This is part of a series and I felt lost. Characters and situations were not explained. The author assumes reader familiarity from prior books. In Southern style, key physical descriptions are withheld and revealed late to shock the reader. I hate that.I did not like "Miss Julia". She was pompous, self-righteous and self-absorbed. And, she thought she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Annoyingly her husband and self-selected associates reinforce this gross misperception. She reveled in being Southern and acts like an embarrassing flighty girl (despite apparently being pretty old). She is extremely ... moreemotional, immature, passive/bullish, and makes odd/unhealthy decisions.Cringe-worthy dialect attributed to black housemaids.Rambling story a la Maeve Binchy. Story ended before main story lines were fully resolved.
review 2: I love relaxing with a Miss Julia but this one seemed liked it was phoned-in. It lacked the pithy comments and thoughts I relish from Miss Julia, a decent plot line, and interesting involvement by other characters like Lloyd, Lillian, and J.D. Pickens. Miss Julia and Etta Mae did get into a scrape near the end but it lacked the usual wackiness. I liked it but there was definitely no laughing out loud and I wasn't excited get back to it. Hope the next one returns to form. less
