review 1: When it's every writer's dream to get at least one short story published in the New Yorker in their lifetime, it would've been kind of deja vu for Ann Beattie. How could someone write in such detail the mundane things of life without making the readers lose their attention? The best thing about these stories is when you finish reading them you ask the question, "What was the story about?" Unlike the sterotype stories, these don't have heavy plots filled with twists and suspense. These are like watching videotape of pople taken using hidden cameras - so realistic. Sometimes funny and other times heartfelt.
review 2: So far, I'm only in the stories that she wrote in the 70s. Reading them is like going into a somewhat disturbing and somewhat familiar time warp. S
... moreo far, they all seem like kaleidoscope variations on the same storyline: it's one in which a young couple gets divorced and a kid or two is stuck in the middle. This is weird, because nowadays, couples aren't getting married (or having kids) in the first place. Her stories of societal chaos are, ironically, more settled than our normal times! More to come as i continue reading. less
